1. It was interesting to see people working on their projects. Some of them I haven't heard the idea on, so they seem completely odd and random.
2.I am excited to see what people's huge cardboard creations and tiny paper sculptures develop into.
3. I learned that i am completely ridiculous when it comes to sign making. So that rules that out as a profession.

1. I thought the explaination of the fluxist artist and the box was great. I think sometimes really simple ideas like that are the most effective.
2. I am really excited for the project, I hope people actually interact with it.
3. I thought it was really interesting to see what ideas other people came up with. Ideas ranged from really creepy to cute to engaging. I think it will be cool to see how everything turns out.

Grades and Motivation
The question that I want you to think about his how you can psychologically trick yourself into being more creative. How can you work on projects that are going to be graded without letting it affect your creativity? What coping habits might help maintain creativity?
Oh gosh, I'm not really sure. I guess the best way to go about it would to try and think of yourself as getting graded by how much time you put it. Most projects are better the more time they have committed to them. So if you set a goal of how much time you spend, and think of the idea and creativity as independent from grading and judgement you are more likely to succeed then if you try and cater to a teachers desires for your project. That way you still have motivation to work hard, and put in the time, but the creative aspect of the project doesn't suffer.

Response to Mona Lisa
When I make art, and when I look at art I never think of it as a masking or hiding device. I don't think most art is meant to distract from the artist. There is a quote, I believe of Picasso's that says "artists use lies to tell the truth". I think that although art may be viewed as deceiving it is usually made in the pursuit of truth and revelation. I think many important artists use art to expose and unveil truths about the world or themselves through art, not to cover themselves.
I do think the idea of the connection between artwork and viewer is very interesting. Artists create work to connect with an audience one way or another, so the analysis of that connection is interesting to look into.

April 6 class
1. I was pretty impressed with how Gokey worked around the issue with the stereogram maker. When I run into computer trouble I tend to give up immediately, so I was surprised he was able to find a way around it. I learned you can google error messages!
2. I thought the art piece with the floating furniture was amazing. It blows my mind that some could think of that...and paint such straight lines.
3. I also was interested by the idea of picturesque. I can see how the world becomes more and more picturesque, and art itself. I have probably seen just as much art through the internet and cheap recreations as i have in person. In a way this is amazing, becuase it allows us constant access to art and culture, but it is also sort of a drag, because art is so different in person.

Artist Statement
The mural is to be painted on the back of a building through a parking lot. To me this location is almost a place that should not be seen. It seems like a place you would have to be looking for to see it, almost as if you would have to be sneaky to see it. For this reason I chose to suggest a series of windows painted on the wall each showing a scene that you would probably have to be sneaky to get a glimpse of. I want the viewer to feel like they stumbled upon they shouldn’t be seeing.
The images will include someone smoking, pot, a couple in some sort of pre or post sensual scene, a child stealing, and a girl singing into a hairbrush. Each image will be in a grey scale, except for one item of importance, which will be colored.
I want the images to raise questions about what goes on when people aren’t looking. Most of the scenes have a dark side to them, meant to almost make the viewer confused or uncomfortable. I think the location will emphasize this feeling because it is fairly isolated location.

5 Mural Ideas
1. Well, they have barred windows, so maybe a prison break scene with all sorts of pandamonium?
2. The location is in a fairly concrete asphalt brick zone so I was thinking of having a "nature takes over" thing with vines at trees irrupting out of the bricks. Painted and maybe even make some from pipe or wire.
3. "Sneaky Peeker" would have a series of windows painted onto the wall and in each would be some sort of scene you would see by being a sneaky peeker. For example a pair of lovers, someone stealing, someone smoking, etc. (Since the mural is on the back of the building).
4. A bunch of little silloutte guys crawling all over the building using lines created by bricks as their floor levels.
5. More installationy...create a long thin box/shelf at foot of the wall, find a way to chain or somehow attach bottles of spray pain to the box, so that any viewer can spray on the wall but can't take the bottle. Start out with just the word "MURAL" spray painted on the wall.

Mural Response
First, based on this article, what would you say were the five essential elements of the Mexican mural movement? Second, compare and contrast the context of this movement with our present situation in Syracuse in 2010. If we are going to try to make a work of art for the public in Syracuse how are we going to have to approach this problem differently? What has remained the same between our context and the Mexican muralists' context?
1. I would say the the five essential elements of the Mexican mural movement are 1. raising awareness and a sense of rebellion in the people of Mexico, 2. creating a mood and raising a topic using only aesthetics, 3. representing truths and opinions openly for everyone to see, 4. creating debate and displaying political ideas for the public eye, 5. openly opposing the government in a way that is accessible to all, upper and lower class, educated and uneducated.
2. At the time the artists were making statements about leadership, capitalism versus communism, and equality of the classes. I think the issue the is the most valid between now and then in Syracuse is the issue of poverty. There are many poor people in Syracuse, and as someone who works in one of the schools here i know that there are serious issues with the education. One could even say that we at the university are the elevated upper class, going through higher education while less then half the children of Syracuse will not graduate high school.

February 16 Class
1. I liked looking at the mural examples. I actually found it interesting that the best murals arer done in South America. I took a figure drawing class with Jerome last semester and he showed us another South American mural painters work and I LOVED it.
2. I liked seeing what other people came up with for their amalgamations. There were some great ideas!

February 9 Class
Things I learned:
1. Well, we learned the basics of photoshop. I have very little experience with photoshop, so that was pretty valuable.
2. I learned that crying kids make hilarious faces. And you can tell how pissed a kid is depending on how wide their mouth is opened. If they are just upset they make an upside down banana face, if they are reeeeally mad they have full open mouth screaming faces.
3. I learned that the political management of our country is overwhelmingly white and male. (From the senator amalgamation).
Things I found interesting:
1. I thought the similarities of facial expressions of crying children was really interesting. I got kids from all over the world. I have an Iraqi boy, I have malnurished African children, and I have photos of American kids that their parents posted online and there is a universal face of sadness. Its crazy.
2. I thought the Senator/Representative artwork was reeeeally interesting. Seeing the democratic and republican faces all four together was creepy. Its almost like a big brother sort of thing, it looks like they have to fit this creepy perfect older white man meld.
3. I also thought it was pretty cool the variety of ideas in people's sketch books. I thought it was really insane to see everyones different takes on the idea of cover. I wish we would have had a chance to hear everyone explain theirs. It always impresses me to see what a group of people can come up with. There is insane diversity of thought and interpretation.
Ideas!
1. I want to do more with my chalk board spray paint. I'm trying to think of a really cool way to use it. Currently I have a blob shape cut out to put on my wall....
2. I also think if I end up enjoying the amalgamation I will try it out on some of my other ideas. I'm genuinely interested to see what will happen with some of the other ideas I have written down.
3. I want to amalgamate family and friend faces too. I think it would be kind of hilarious. There are all those sites that make what your baby with someone else would look like...i feel like i could do that with amalgamation. I think i could do some sweet stuff with heritage family stuff.

My five favorite ideas are:
1. Crying Child. I think that emotion is something that is universal. The pictures of the children could vary widely, but I think that the underlying feeling would still come through. There are things about humans that span across race, religion and culture. Crying is universally understood as a reaction to sadness.
2. Mug shots of drug criminals. I think this could be interesting because there is a lot of discrimination when it comes to arrest and the law. Also, drugs can really effect the way a person looks, so if I can find the right kind of pictures it could be interesting to see the emaciation that results.
3. Beauty pageant winners. I think this could make an interesting statement about what people find beautiful. I think a lot of times the high cheek boned overmade up white woman tends to be the winner of attention.
4. Malnurished children. There are children all over the world who don't get enough food. Society pays very little attention to such problems so it would be interesting to try and find enough pictures for this one. I also think again, there is a universal human reaction to things in life. I find that in many pictures of underfed children the subjects look defeated.
5. 100 richest people. If i could find a list of the 100 richest people in the world I think it would be really interesting to see what they had in common. What race, dress, and expression would they have in common?
